What is SEO?
SEO describes the method of optimizing your website for the purpose of increasing its visibility on search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing, for the targeted keywords. So if you’re a car rental company, you want people to be able to find your website when they search for “car rental malaysia” on Google.
What does “Increasing Visibility” means?
SEO does not only mean having better rankings in the search results, it also means being ranked for as many relevant keywords as possible.
How do I find out what are Malaysian’s searching for?
Google provides a free tool called the Keyword Planner. Although intended for AdWords advertisers, you can use it to discover popular searched keywords that are relevant to your business. In addition, you can also check out Google Trends, to discover trending keywords.
How does SEO work?
Different search engines use different algorithms to rank websites. Google alone has claim to use over 200 different signals, which they update quite frequently – up to 200 changes a year! Hence, what works today may not necessarily work tomorrow.
Nobody knows exactly what are those signals but based on what has been shared by publishers and SEO practitioners, they largely boil down to:
a) Relevance – determined by the content of the webpage.
b) Trust – determined by the backlinks, i.e. links from other websites to yours.
Can I get penalized?
Yes! If not done properly, you can get punished by having your website pushed back in the search results or even totally deindexed. If your website is hit by a manual penalty, you will receive a message in your Webmaster Tool.
Can I outsource my SEO?
Yes! There are many SEO agencies in Malaysia and a good place to start is to browse the Malaysian SEO Company Directory. The directory provides a comprehensive list of SEO companies in Malaysia and also tips on choosing a company to outsource to.
How much does outsourced SEO costs?
The costs depend on the amount of work required and usually work on a monthly retainer. SearchGuru, for example, charges a monthly fee of RM950 for 10-keyword SEO campaign. Check out the company’s seo services page to learn more about what is included in their service.
Can SEO rankings be guaranteed?
No! Nobody can guarantee your website rankings and you cannot pay to get ranked #1. Read Google’s SEO checklist for a quick rundown on SEO.
