What is VPS hosting?
A VPS, which stands for Virtual Private Server, has a lot less customers per server. Using virtualization software like Virtuozzo, the hosting provider allocates server resources to each customer, depending on the subscribed plan. It’s more powerful than shared hosting but less than dedicated hosting. Fees range from RM70/mth without the extra add-ons.
Each customer is given a “virtual” server within the web server – completely seperate private hosting environments (i.e. everyone gets their own partitions in the server) although within the same server, so if one customer website goes down or gets infected by virus, the other customer websites are not affected.
A VPS customer is usually someone who requires more computing resources, e.g. because you have more employees who require more emails, or are wary about the risks of sharing servers.
How am I charged for VPS hosting?
Like before, there are several plans which are differentiated by server resources such as hard disk space, memory, CPU and monthly bandwidth allowance. For example, a VPS hosting plan that has 10GB disk space, 1GB RAM, 2 Core CPU and 60GB monthly transfer.
What are the things I should consider for my VPS hosting plan?
In addition to the things to consider for shared hosting, you also have to consider the following:
a) cPanel: unlike shared hosting, you will be charged a monthly fee for cPanel.
b) Managed Plan: monthly service fee, e.g. for OS hardening, manual reboots, etc.
c) IP Address: your own dedicated IP address – most providers limit to 8 IPs per VPS.
How long do I have to wait until I can use my VPS?
Setup for a VPS server takes between 3- 14 working days and depends on availability.
